An intriguing account of the quest to discover the wreck of Shackleton’s Endurance。Generally in my nonfiction polar science/history reading, I prefer accounts of the original voyages to those of modern quests to follow up on them, but this is a fun, informative tale, well told in narrative fashion, about the group that eventually salvaged the wreck of the Endurance after it succumbed to its environment off the Antarctic coast。 Bound is a much better narrator than most in his profession, a bit on An intriguing account of the quest to discover the wreck of Shackleton’s Endurance。Generally in my nonfiction polar science/history reading, I prefer accounts of the original voyages to those of modern quests to follow up on them, but this is a fun, informative tale, well told in narrative fashion, about the group that eventually salvaged the wreck of the Endurance after it succumbed to its environment off the Antarctic coast。 Bound is a much better narrator than most in his profession, a bit on the goofy, philosophical side but also affable, enthusiastic, and not too mired in the tech nerd lingo of his profession to tell a good story to the masses。 The descriptions of both ships and of Shackleton’s semi ill-fated journey were much more to my liking than the parts of the book that focused on how things like modern ice cutting tools work (my mind wandered a bit during these segments), but on the whole it’s a well-balanced and complete account of Bound and his team’s two attempts (one failed, one successful) to find the Endurance。*I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review。* 。。。more

Mensun Bound’s "The Ship Beneath the Ice" is unique in that the reader is brought along on two incredible adventures that took place over a century apart — Sir Ernest Shackleton’s doomed expedition to the Antarctic, which is the most incredible story of survival and human grit that I can fathom, and Mensun Bound’s Expedition to find Shackleton’s lost ship, which sunk beneath the ice in “the worst patch of the worst portion of the worst sea in the world。”I learned A LOT in this book。 I can’t even Mensun Bound’s "The Ship Beneath the Ice" is unique in that the reader is brought along on two incredible adventures that took place over a century apart — Sir Ernest Shackleton’s doomed expedition to the Antarctic, which is the most incredible story of survival and human grit that I can fathom, and Mensun Bound’s Expedition to find Shackleton’s lost ship, which sunk beneath the ice in “the worst patch of the worst portion of the worst sea in the world。”I learned A LOT in this book。 I can’t even count the number of times I stopped to annotate a note saying “wow!” or “unbelievable!” However, the book still wasn’t as much of a page turner as I thought it would be。 It’s pretty detail heavy, including on the science and technology of the modern-day expedition, and while I appreciate that it is important information, it did bog down the story a bit for me。The glimpses into Shackleton’s expedition were fascinating and the research into the diaries of Shackleton’s men was superb。 I loved reading the excerpts, learning about the different personalities, and seeing how the history mirrored and informed the modern-day mission。 However, some of the flashbacks didn’t flow seamlessly and left the book feeling a bit choppy。 My favorite part of "The Ship Beneath the Ice" is how much Bound’s voice comes through the pages。 There are some exceptionally beautiful quotes peppered throughout, and Bound was able to make me feel his elation, his disappointment, and his determination。 I was truly rooting for him! 。。。more

The Ship Beneath the Ice: The Discovery of Shackleton's Endurance by Mensun Bound is a very highly recommended account of the two expeditions undertaken in 2019 and 2022 to successfully find the Endurance。Briefly, on November 21, 1914, Ernest Shackleton and his crew sailed the Endurance to Antarctica to become the first to cross the continent, but early season pack ice trapped them in place and the Endurance sank。 Since this the Endurance was one of the most legendary lost ships and the most unr The Ship Beneath the Ice: The Discovery of Shackleton's Endurance by Mensun Bound is a very highly recommended account of the two expeditions undertaken in 2019 and 2022 to successfully find the Endurance。Briefly, on November 21, 1914, Ernest Shackleton and his crew sailed the Endurance to Antarctica to become the first to cross the continent, but early season pack ice trapped them in place and the Endurance sank。 Since this the Endurance was one of the most legendary lost ships and the most unreachable due to the hostile environment。 The Ship Beneath the Ice is the account of marine archeologist Mensun Bound and an elite team of explorers set out to find the lost shipwreck。This real life adventure story is told through diary entries of Bound and extracts of diary entries of Shackleton and his men。 The first recovery operation in 2019 was proceeded by years of preparation and then they had many technical challenges with the AUV。 Finally they had to stop the first expedition once the weather deteriorated and the ship got stuck in the ice。 The team launched their second attempt in 2022 with new equipment, a Sabertooth diving vessel with a tilt camera, and had success。For those who enjoy maritime history, the story of the Endurance, or following searches for lost parts of history will likely appreciate this story of successfully uncovering a part of history while also presenting the historical facts of the original expedition。 The book is well written and descriptive, although the diary entries require some getting used to at first。 The presentation of the history and current situation are expertly written and the tension involved is clearly shown in both timelines。Disclosure: My review copy was courtesy of HarperCollins and Mariner Books via Edelweiss。http://www。shetreadssoftly。com/2023/0。。。 。。。more

This was the continuation of an already truly fascinating tale of adventure and survival。 I thoroughly enjoyed Bound's blend of Shackleton's expedition alongside the 2019 and 2022 expeditions。 The details and photographs added so much awesomeness to all of the accounts。 It was such an incredible journey then and now。 And to read about history in the making with the discovery of the shipwreck, it was just perfection on the page。 What an amazing tale of a goal and a labor of love all wrapped into This was the continuation of an already truly fascinating tale of adventure and survival。 I thoroughly enjoyed Bound's blend of Shackleton's expedition alongside the 2019 and 2022 expeditions。 The details and photographs added so much awesomeness to all of the accounts。 It was such an incredible journey then and now。 And to read about history in the making with the discovery of the shipwreck, it was just perfection on the page。 What an amazing tale of a goal and a labor of love all wrapped into one。 This was an excellent book that I was so excited to purchase and devour。 。。。more

Ok so here’s why you should read this book1。 I predominantly read fantasy, science fiction, and horror。 I never read non-fiction。 Not only did this book capture my imagination, but it help it until the very end。 2。 I knew very little about Shackleton before reading this book。 Now I’m so fascinated I’ve worked out when the to show is coming out and what other books I can get my hands on to learn more。 Fascinating story。

This was very nearly a DNF。The only parts I found interesting and well-written were the sections about Shackleton's Imperial Trans-Antarctic Crossing。 I didn't actually care about the discovery expeditions, they were quite dull and overburdened with technical minutiae about underwater search vehicles and hydrographic-related terminology, which the author in no way presented in a particularly accessible or exciting way。 I ended up skipping all of the present-day happenings (i。e。 most of the book) This was very nearly a DNF。The only parts I found interesting and well-written were the sections about Shackleton's Imperial Trans-Antarctic Crossing。 I didn't actually care about the discovery expeditions, they were quite dull and overburdened with technical minutiae about underwater search vehicles and hydrographic-related terminology, which the author in no way presented in a particularly accessible or exciting way。 I ended up skipping all of the present-day happenings (i。e。 most of the book) in favour of the Shackleton section。 This meant that Part 2 flew by in no time at all, as Bound's recounting of Shackleton's tale was over by then。 Though I'm aware the focus of the book is on the discovery of the Endurance, it's a shame we didn't get a fuller account of Shackleton's journey。Who knew one could make an account of a shipwreck discovery so boring?Turns out what I actually wanted to read was an account of Shackleton's journey。 。。。more

This detailed day by day account of the search for the "Endurance" using modern technology can be a bit tedious at times, but what brought this book alive for me was the interleaving of extracts from the various diaries of those on the original expedition, and Mensun Bound's comments on them。Although Bound is clearly a great admirer of Shackleton and makes no criticism of him, these diary extracts do raise some questions in my mind about Shackleton's leadership。 For example, why the delay in rem This detailed day by day account of the search for the "Endurance" using modern technology can be a bit tedious at times, but what brought this book alive for me was the interleaving of extracts from the various diaries of those on the original expedition, and Mensun Bound's comments on them。Although Bound is clearly a great admirer of Shackleton and makes no criticism of him, these diary extracts do raise some questions in my mind about Shackleton's leadership。 For example, why the delay in removing stores from the "Endurance" when the ship was filling with water and clearly going to sink? When they finally did decide to remove the stores on to the ice, it was only possible by cutting a hole in the 3 inch deck planks, a job that had to be done under water, in which "Chippy" McNish, the carpenter, played a major role。 McNish was an awkward character, but the decision by Shackleton to deny him the Polar Medal which almost all the rest of the crew received does seem petty。 。。。more

Phenomenal, excellent read。 Thoroughly enjoyed the parallels between Shackleton's expedition and the modern day ones。 Very accessible。My only negative is, despite acknowledging early on that people are fond of animals and don't love knowing about unfortunate things that may happen to them, he seemed intent on repeating such events well past their relevancy。 I don't mean the truth should be sugar-coated, if it's part of the story then there's no issue with it being told, it's when it's excessivel Phenomenal, excellent read。 Thoroughly enjoyed the parallels between Shackleton's expedition and the modern day ones。 Very accessible。My only negative is, despite acknowledging early on that people are fond of animals and don't love knowing about unfortunate things that may happen to them, he seemed intent on repeating such events well past their relevancy。 I don't mean the truth should be sugar-coated, if it's part of the story then there's no issue with it being told, it's when it's excessively repeated - was he trying to upset readers? 。。。more

Terrific。 Wonderful, epic story, brilliantly told。 Sir Earnest Shackleton was trying to reach the South Pole, in 1914, but his ship Endurance became ice-bound, crushed, and had to be abandoned。 Shackleton, brilliantly, rode the shifting ice floes with his crew until they reached Elephant Island, then sailed a small boat 10 days to South Georgia to arrange rescue。 In the end, he didn't lose a single man。Mensun Bound, the author, is the marine archaeologist who directed the search for the wreck。 F Terrific。 Wonderful, epic story, brilliantly told。 Sir Earnest Shackleton was trying to reach the South Pole, in 1914, but his ship Endurance became ice-bound, crushed, and had to be abandoned。 Shackleton, brilliantly, rode the shifting ice floes with his crew until they reached Elephant Island, then sailed a small boat 10 days to South Georgia to arrange rescue。 In the end, he didn't lose a single man。Mensun Bound, the author, is the marine archaeologist who directed the search for the wreck。 First, unsuccessfully, in 2019, beset by foul weather and equipment failure。 Then, again, in 2022, when the team succeeded。 The eerie, evocative film of the beautifully preserved wreckage was shown worldwide。 But the success was a close call: winter was closing in, the search was hampered by drifting ice floes and filthy weather and the find happened only hours before the deadline to leave or risk being as ice-bound as Shackleton himself。So there's a powerful myth underlying the hunt, brought vividly to life by Bound's close knowledge of Endurance's history and the crew's diaries; the personalities are alongside him every day。 There's an exciting will-they-won't-they quest that succeeds in the nick of time。 And, for Bound, it was a life-defining project: he was by then 69 and sure to be remembered as the man who did - or failed to - find Endurance。It's vivid, immediate, authoritative and quite possibly unforgettable。 。。。more

Mensun Bound’s book tells two fascinating stories: that of Shackleton’s shipwreck and against-all-odds survival and an account of the expeditions a hundred years later to locate Shackleton’s ship, The Endurance, beneath the Weddell Sea。 In spite of the fact that we know the outcome of each - Shackleton and his entire crew miraculously survived and Endurance was found and photographed – both, in their different ways, are suspenseful tales of courage and ingenuity in a hostile environment。The raw Mensun Bound’s book tells two fascinating stories: that of Shackleton’s shipwreck and against-all-odds survival and an account of the expeditions a hundred years later to locate Shackleton’s ship, The Endurance, beneath the Weddell Sea。 In spite of the fact that we know the outcome of each - Shackleton and his entire crew miraculously survived and Endurance was found and photographed – both, in their different ways, are suspenseful tales of courage and ingenuity in a hostile environment。The raw material for this book is wonderfully epic and, in spite of its shortcomings, it is well worth reading。 It is, however, repeatedly let down by the writing。 Bound jumps from the events of 1915 to the 2019 expedition with detours via his earlier career and passages of vague environmentalism。 His account is heavy laden with acronyms:‘Once the ROV was back at 1830 hours, CTD and coring work was conducted at Station No。 2, following which AUV 9 was launched for further tests。’It is studded with odd metaphors: ‘We have 25 scientists on Agulhas II: the full petri dish, you might say’, and at times it reads more Mills & Boon: ‘Ray is a rough, tough, spit-in-your-eye Texan with a physique straight out of Stonehenge。’Bound was the Director of Exploration on the expedition to locate Endurance。 It is ironic that his greatest insights are from his study of the Shackleton expedition, particularly the diaries of Shackleton’s crew, rather than from the expeditions he lead to find it。 At one point he writes, ‘Shackleton['s diary] is probably the most irritating of all because he, potentially, has the most to say, but he does not say it。’ That is just how I feel about Bound。 。。。more
